Kevin Harris of Orion and Walt Romney Jr. of Clyde Snow Publish "IT and the Business of Billable Time" in this Months Peer to Peer Issue from ILTA

In both proactive and reactive ways, IT professionals play a central role in billing at a law firm, and their contributions are instrumental to the success of the firm. They are in a position to streamline and increase billings by providing excellent support and software. Their ability to solve technology problems as they arise ensures lawyers and paralegals have a clear path to meeting their hourly targets each day. The more IT cooperates and collaborates with lawyers and staff to create a functional workflow, the more profitable the firm will be and the better morale will be.

“It's About Time You Got Paid” by Kevin Harris on Attorney At Work

You deserve to get paid for your valuable legal services – whether you are a solo practitioner or working at a larger law firm.

In the article It's About Time You Got Paid in the July issue of Attorney At Work, Kevin Harris, Project Manager of Orion, explains five principles that will help you develop a solid understanding of payment expectations with your clients.

Harris takes readers through a step-by-step process of laying down groundwork for a payment collection policy. He discusses the importance of tracking your time accurately, building a collection strategy, and using tools to help you along the way – among other useful tips.

The takeaway message in this article is that you can avoid the hassles of chasing down your clients every month and collect on invoices more successfully. You can also maintain a solid relationship with your clients in the process. You owe it to the health of your legal practice to collect payment for services rendered so you can keep doing what you are doing and put your mind at ease.

The importance of Accounts Receivable (AR), although sometimes overlooked, plays a major role in law firm profitability.

Kevin Harris of Orion and Allison Renaud, director of finance at Iowa-based law firm Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler and Hagen P.C, shed light on this topic in their article Accelerating Receivables for Greater Profitability in the July/August issue of Law Practice Magazine. The take-away message of the article sums it up nicely, "Lawyers who ignore A/R until they run into cash-flow or collection problems do so at their own peril." In their article, Harris and Renaud take readers through the process of identifying the issues and implementing mitigating and preventative solutions. Although many factors, such as lack of billing practices, poor economic environment, and time play a role in unsuccessful A/R performance, one of the major problems comes down to having outdated or nonexistent A/R technology tools. Investing in an A/R Collections Management System can improve cash flow while decreasing both collection times and costs. Also, A/R Management Systems like Orion's allow firms to build policies and procedures right into the technology. Other benefits include the ability to work on the road with smartphones and tablets and bi-directional synchronization of contacts, calendar appointments, and tasks with Microsoft Exchange- all of which additionally increase efficiencies and help firms weather the current economic conditions. Law Technology News Article Shows Orion Besting LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters Products in Law Practice Management Software Showdown

Recently, Law Technology News editor Sean Doherty ran a Compare & Contrast article conducting an apples-to-apples comparison of three software systems installed in midsize law firms of 50+ attorneys: Orion Law Management Systems, Lexis Nexis' Time Matters and Juris, and Thomson Reuters' ProLaw. Orion came out on top in nearly every category and also had the lowest price of all products evaluated. Doherty's categories for comparison included Integration and Operating Environment, Practice Management, Financial Management and Cost. He noted that from his findings it was understandable why midsize law firms would stick with their on-premise software, since features of onsite solutions are better suited their particular size. According to Doherty, full-featured accounting packages along with software for docketing and calendar rules, conflicts management, and contract relationship management with marketing features are ideal for midsize firms and the technology suites offer deep integration with a firm's back-office infrastructure as well as front-office tools. Notably in the yes/no comparison of features of each system, Orion's Management system came in first for client intake management, records management, accounts payable imaging, and payroll. Orion is the only system to include every feature listed. ProLaw XII R2 has a client intake management feature, but it does not have records management, accounts payable imaging or payroll. TimeMatters 11.1 has records management, but does not have payroll, client intake management, or accounts payable imaging. And Juris 2.5 has a payroll feature but falls short in many other areas. Doherty's review not only helped to uncover criteria to help midsize firms evaluate their traditional vs. software as a service (SaaS) choices, but also singled out Orion Law Management as the "go-to" vendor for getting the most value for the entire firm.
