June 2016 - Technology Tip - Technology Audit – Supported Windows Platforms

In order for Orion and many of your other software systems/integrations to work properly, your firm needs to make sure it is using a fully supported version of Windows (Windows 7 or better). Our payment processing partner, OpenEdge, recently sent out a support bulletin to inform clients that they must be installed with a supported operating system in order to be compliant with their security certificates.

In order to ensure that you don’t experience any service interruptions, take a moment to meet with your IT staff to verify that your firm is using a recommended version of Windows. March 2016 - Press Release - Orion Law Management Systems Announces Expanded Mobile Features and Android Platform Capability through iOrion® Version 3.0

iOrion Version 3.0 Features Include:

Additional updates were put in place to improve time management capabilities in iOrion. Subscribers will now experience added control over the display of dollar amounts in Fee Entry and Time Manager, management of time zones in Smart Timers and user-based nicknames added to Smart Timers/Matter list views. These enhancements allow greater customization, efficiency and overall ease of use for iOrion subscribers.

The process of submitting expense reimbursement requests also received an upgrade. iOrion allows attorneys or their legal assistants to conveniently attach receipts to each reimbursement request. Now, iOrion has implemented DropboxTM support. This enables copies of receipts to be added directly from Dropbox, making the reimbursement process easier than ever before.

September 2015 - Technology Tip - Windows 10 Release

Windows 10 launched globally on July 29, 2015. Do you know what enhancements are included in this release? Below, we have listed some of the key highlights.

  • Enterprise users can manage company-wide roll outs for Windows 10 updates.
  • Microsoft Edge replaces Internet Explorer as Windows 10’s default web browser.
  • Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant (think Apple’s Siri) launches to computers (no longer limited to mobile devices).
  • Within the first year of its release, Windows 10 is available as a free upgrade.
  • Android and iOS apps that are rebuilt for Windows 10 functionality can run on the new OS.

July 2015 - Orion Announcement - OpenEdge Website for EMV Answers

Orion’s trusted partner for Credit/Debit card processing has an important announcement regarding EMV technology that we want to share with our readers.

First off, what is EMV?

EMV is a chip technology used globally in place of magnetic stripe. EMV chip technology helps to reduce card fraud in a face-to-face card-present environment, provides global interoperability and enables safer and smarter transactions across contact and contactless channels. EMV was conceived by EuroPay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV). This group now includes representatives from all major world brands including American Express, Discover, etc.

Why EMV and why now?

EMV has been the credit card standard in most industrialized nations for years. The United States is among the last hold-outs, and technically-advanced criminals have exploited that situation. EMV is a much more secure model for processing payments, so thieves have naturally gravitated toward the easier-to-steal data on magnetic stripe cards. The result has been a series of high-profile and damaging card data breaches. In fact, while the U.S. accounts for only a quarter of the world’s transactions, about half of all credit card fraud happens in the United States. EMV will correct that disparity and help make digital commerce safer.

July 2015 - Technology Tip - 1099 Support – Mid Year Update

Processing and creating 1099 Forms is done once a year and can be a challenging task. Although it is only July, we are bringing up this topic so that you will be aware of what can be done throughout the year to help make this a much easier task come January.

One way to speed up the process is to make sure the vendors have been set-up properly. If you know when you set up a new vendor that a 1099 will more than likely be required at the end of the year, go ahead and set it up that way on the front end (i.e. include the 1099 type – typically 1099 Misc. – and obtain and enter the Federal Tax ID number or SSN if it is an individual)…
